New York: Security panel seeking national identity card

An anti-terrorism committee created in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center will call for creation of a national identification card system and federal government take over of airport security, according to its chairman.

New York State Sen. Roy Goodman, who created the panel last month, said Wednesday the recommendations are two of 50 to be detailed today at a news conference in New York City. The panel, which includes four former New York City police commissioners and other law enforcement officials, will also urge a tightening of private aviation security.

The universal identification card system would use high-tech microchips storing fingerprints, facial characteristics and retinal images. Goodman said the panel had not decided if the ID cards should be mandatory, but that a mandatory system would "maximize safety and security." The cards would be available to all residents and visitors to the United States; those who could afford it would be charged a fee.

Is this what the national ID card is for? One set of laws for us and another set for visitors? What about that we are a nation of laws and that those laws apply to everyone. How about, "We hold these truths to be self evident..." Well not according to President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Attorney General Ashcroft! - Rejr

"...In his infamous emergency order, Bush admits to dismissing "the principles of law and the rules of evidence" that undergird America's system of justice. He seizes the power to circumvent the courts and set up his own drumhead tribunals - panels of officers who will sit in judgment of non-citizens who the president need only claim "reason to believe" are members of terrorist organizations..."

"...His kangaroo court can conceal evidence by citing national security, make up its own rules, find a defendant guilty even if a third of the officers disagree, and execute the alien with no review by any civilian court..."
